Zawood Prolongs the Life of Wood through Recycling and Upgrading Services
With the growing awareness of environmental protection, more and more people nowadays opt for an environmentally-friendly living environment. Zawood was therefore established in 2012 with the business philosophy of being environmentally-friendly, simple and natural. Zawood specialises in injecting new vitality into old and waste wood materials, such as beams of old houses and old doors, by turning the materials into stylish furniture, hoping to create a warm and cosy home for clients with solid wood.

Appreciating the beauty of wood
Situated in a small alley off Avenida do Coronel Mesquita, the Zawood shop is filled with wood decorations and furniture, and the sound of wood being cut can be heard occasionally from the carpentry workshop nearby. Zawood features a wide array of solid wood products produced with sophisticated craftsmanship, which range from storage cabinets, bedsteads, tables and chairs to decorative lighting, clocks and ornaments. In addition to original products, Zawood also makes unique wooden items tailored to clients’ specific needs, which can showcase how flexible wood can be as a material.
Wooden furniture is rich in vitality. Each piece of wood has its own grain and scent, and the colour of the wood gets shinier as time goes by. I prefer keeping the style of solid wood furniture as it is instead of applying varnish’. Zawood’s general manager, Dave Wan, who worked in the IT industry for years, noted that his father was a carpenter, and he has developed a special affection for wood given the woodcraft he has experienced since his childhood. Later, when his father retired, he felt it was truly a pity that no one inherited his father’s craftsmanship, so he resolutely left the IT industry where he had gained years of work experience and took over his father’s carpentry shop.

Old and waste wood materials revitalised
Zawood’s clients are mainly local young people who not only like the design styles but also appreciate the brand’s environmentally-friendly practice of using old and waste wood materials, including beams of old houses and old doors. When speaking of recycling old wood, Wan mentioned that old wood materials are mainly the beams of old houses, which are particularly solid and durable and less prone to mildew or deformation, as the moisture has completely evaporated and the interior fibre has become relatively stable after years of weathering. After refurbishment by craftspeople, this old wood can be given a fresh new appearance and reused in daily life. It is not easy to find old wood materials: suppliers look for all possible sources but not every piece of solid wood can be reused. The usability of wood has to be identified based on its age, residual moisture and degree of weathering, and a certain level of knowledge and research experience is required, which is also unique to and one of the advantages of Zawood.

In the future, Zawood will continue to improve its brand products and strive to organise their functions, hoping to introduce wood products into clients’ living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and even bathrooms, thereby raising the brand’s profile. With continuous marketing and advertising through Macao Ideas, Wan hopes to introduce the Macao-based wood furniture brand to different countries and regions, enter the market in Mainland China or Hong Kong as a ‘Macao Brand’, and open more bricks-and-mortar stores.
