Macau Fachau: Specialty Liquor of the Town
Macau Fachau Wine Company Limited was set up in 2013. Its founder, Chan Iu Kuong, is a nationally accredited winemaker and veteran of the wine industry with a deep understanding of the wine culture in Macao and Mainland China. To fill the gap in Macao’s alcohol market and promote the Chinese baijiu (a clear, colourless liquor) culture, Chan Iu Kuong spent years developing the Macau Fachau, a wine with distinct local characteristics.

Filling a gap in the market with Macau Fachau
Baijiu, as a kind of distilled spirits, is an important representative of the Chinese wine culture. It has been a dominant part of China’s spirit market, but is not a mainstream in Macao. According to Chan, wine and spirits like whisky and brandy are more common in Macao. During his early days in Sichuan, he found it difficult to market baijiu outside China, which is why he spent eight years researching and developing Macau Fachau to introduce this kind of spirit to the international society. Collaborating with a local distillery owned by his good friend, he successfully launched the product in Macao.
Macau Fachau is a clear liquid brew purely from fermented sorghum and has a secret jiuqu (dried fermentation starter) formula. A truly aromatic wine that does not go to the head, Macau Fachau fills the gap in Macao’s alcohol market. The packaging of Macau Fachau embodies the mixture of Chinese and Western cultures. The bottle is designed graphically with a Chinese theme and made with Portuguese blue and white porcelain techniques, highlighting the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures in Macao.

Origin of the name “Macao Fachau”
The name “Macau Fachau” has a historical origin. In the old days, Macao, Zhongshan and Zhuhai were collectively called “Xiangshan”, and Fachau (literally “flower liquor”) was the earliest known liquor in the history of Xiangshan, where had a customary way of making alcohol with Chrysanthemum and wild rose. Fachau is distilled in the traditional way. Chan introduces that during the distillation, the best-quality liquor generates flower-like foam, and the winemaker usually get rid of the early- and late- stage brew and only keeps the middle part, which is the sweetest and fullest-bodied. Therefore, the name “Macau Fachau” was chosen to pass on the Fachau culture and symbolise the essence of baijiu.

Promoting Chinese baijiu with the help of IPIM
Chan Iu Kuong says that promoting Chinese baijiu drinking culture in Macao is no easy task. He thanks the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) for its continuous support, which enables him to successfully establish co-operation with mainland and local buyers through business matching sessions. In the future, he expects to increase brand awareness, create a direct communication channel with buyers and expand business opportunities at home and abroad through “Macao Ideas”.
Developing online business model and actively giving back to the community
Macau Fachau is actively preparing for its entry into e-commerce platforms and plans to apply for IPIM’s “E-Commerce Promotion Incentive Measures” to grasp new opportunities. Chan Iu Kuong believes that in this way, Macau Fachau will be appreciated by more baijiu-lovers.
Addressing the COVID-19 epidemic, Macau Fachau has been approved by the SAR government to produce alcohol-based disinfectants. Chan says that he hopes to contribute to the fight against the epidemic by making reliable alcohol products.
