ÀO Skincare: Maker of Unusual Macao Souvenir
When it comes to Macao souvenirs, many people would think of various kinds of specialty food. Yet Lau Chi Lung and Iu Wai Man, founders of Hanmay Ltd., a company specialising in beauty products, believe that local specialty products should be more diversified and skincare products can also become Macao’s signature souvenirs.

ÀO – “Aesthetics and Original”
Officially established in 2012, Hanmay Ltd. launched the skincare brand “ÀO” in 2018 to develop skincare products for Asian women. “ÀO” comes from “Aesthetic and Original”, meaning to promote the beauty and originality of Macao’s culture. “ÀO” is also the first syllable of “Macao” in Chinese, highlighting the Macao characteristics of the brand. The founders hope to bring local consumers and tourists a variety of skincare products with distinct Macao features, and gradually turn the products into unique souvenirs of Macao to offer visitors more gift choices.

Perfect gift: Phoenix Tea Mask
“Phoenix Tea Wake-up Mask” is ÀO's first product. The team went to the Chaoshan area to source phoenix tea, which can eliminate reactive oxygen, brighten skin and relieve skin allergy, as the natural ingredient of their product. The R&D took almost a year in Korea, with every step of the production carefully taken care of, from choosing the fabric of mask to balancing the amount of essence. The aim is to ensure that the product is natural and pure. The founders named the mask the “Taste” series, with the hope that that users feel like their skin is enjoying tea. They also believe that the connotation of luxury and auspiciousness of “phoenix” will make the mask a perfect gift.
Sleeping mask for all genders
“Lotus Sleeping Mask” is the second featured product of ÀO, belonging to the “Purity” series. Macao is known as the “land of the treasure lotus”, with lotus as its emblematic flower. Lotus also embodies purity and elegance in Chinese culture, as it rises unsullied from mud. The lotus flower extract helps moisturise, balance, firm and detoxify skin and it is antiaging. Macao is located at the edge of the tropical area and has a subtropical maritime climate, which is humid and rainy. This mask gets ride of the stickiness commonly found in sleeping masks in the market; it does not stick to the pillow when used at night and helps makeup stay when used in daytime. “Lotus Sleeping Mask” is perfect for busy urban men and women.

Promoting Macao culture and integrating into national development
In the future, the ÀO team plans to integrate the brand philosophy with Macao’s culture and launch quality products that feature local characteristics, such as the “Purity” series, blends Portuguese and Chinese cultures in Macao. ÀO has plans to expand its promotional channels by developing online sales platform. It also works in line with the policies of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and strives to promote tripartite co-operation among Macao, Korea and Zhuhai to jointly develop skincare products that contain Chinese medicinal ingredients. An integrated one-stop beauty salon in Hengqin is also being discussed to offer a new approach to skincare.
The co-founder Lau Chi Lung has been taking part in various activities organised by the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM). Through participation in the Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF) and Dynamic Macao Week, the brand has been able to boost sales and build business network. Lau hopes to increase brand awareness through “Macao Ideas”, which will allow ÀO to grow steadily in the future.
