Since the Yin and Shang dynasties, the Five Blessings have referred to “longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a peaceful death”. In contemporary times, they are also interpreted as “fortune, prosperity, longevity, happiness, and wealth.” In jade carving art, homophones (in Chinese pronunciation) are often used to depict bats, butterflies, and tigers, to symbolize “good fortune”. The artwork uses an abstract technique to sculpt five butterflies soaring towards an ancient plum tree. The green hue of the butterflies accentuates the translucency of the jade, showcasing the unique jade quality known as “where there is water, there is dragon.” This distinctive characteristic renders the jadeite a remarkably rare and superior-grade jade material. The plum tree trunk is carved in a red cypress hue, emphasizing its wrinkles, slimness, translucency, cracks, curves, and imperfections, effectively portraying the robust and contorted nature of the ancient plum tree. On the barren trunk that has witnessed a thousand years of history, fresh buds unexpectedly emerge, with plum blossoms already in full bloom on several branches. This striking contrast between vicissitudes and youth significantly enhances the artwork’s emotional resonance; the arrival of the Five Blessings also symbolizes a timeless and enduring blessing that has lasted for a thousand years.
