“Gang Guan” Beverages & Syrups: Bringing Sweetness to Life
Water-cress honey is believed to be a drink many Macao locals grow up drinking. Water-cress honey is a common and healthy drink in Macao that one can easily order in a local restaurant. It is tasty, sweet and nourishes the body. Macao Kang Jian Food Co. Ltd. aims to introduce these special Macao favourites to the Mainland, market golden syrup, grenadine syrup, and water-cress honey under the brand “Gang Guan”. All these products have a certificate of origin under CEPA (Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement) agreement. Under this agreement, large amounts of concentrated beverages and syrups are exported to Mainland wholesalers enjoying zero tariff.

Home-run business with strong family bond
“Gang Guan” golden syrup is one of the star products of Macao Kang Jian Food Co. Ltd., whose quality gained the "STC tested" Mark, a recognition from the Hong Kong Standards and Testing Centre (STC). The enterprise founder Chen Huarui has persevered for perfection, selecting high-quality raw materials and adhered to the concept of careful production. Their well-received water-cress honey is made from fresh water-cress boiled for hours in a traditional way, then blended to make pure and fine water-cress honey. Its excellent quality is also favoured by Mainland wholesalers. Chen believes “Made in Macau” has great market potential in the Mainland. Thanks to the favourable trade policy and support from Macao SAR Government, local enterprises can export their products to the large Mainland market to wholesalers and restaurants, bringing the unique Macao flavour to the Mainland. At the moment, “Gang Guan” water-cress honey and syrup products are focusing on the Mainland market. Kang Jian Food Co. Ltd. is Chen’s home-run business, together with his family and friends. The current production is not large. Such a home-run business brings flexibility and convenience to the entire production process, providing flexible production and shipment, times which can reduce unnecessary costs.

Sweet but not greasy as Macao’s unique taste
Although the company currently maintains its existing market in the Mainland and Hong Kong, Chen is still beating with a "Macao heart", hoping to see his own brand in Macao restaurants and supermarkets one day. To this end, he has been actively looking for opportunities. In 2020, through the assistance of the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), the product was displayed in IPIM’s exhibition centre "Macao Ideas". Chen said that this is an opportunity to improve the product exposure, but also as a first step forward into Macao market. “As a niche product with a small-scale production, it is difficult to invest a lot in advertising. Thanks to the support of IPIM, our products will become better known in the local market!" In the future, the company will develop a greater variety of products for their brand, adhering to high-quality raw materials and producing with heart to increase their products’ brand awareness.”
